Art That Moves The Work of Len Lye
Art That Moves The Work of Len Lye
'Kinetic art is the first new category of art since prehistory', ex-pat New Zealand artist Len Lye boldly claimed in an essay in 1964. What did he mean by this? And how does his own work in sculpture and film bear it out? In Art That moves: The Work of Len Lye Roger Horrocks, author of the best-selling 2001 biography of Lye, explores these questions. He describes the forerunners of this 'art that moves', then discusses in detail Lye's life and career as a kinetic artist, how he developed and envisioned his 'tangible motion sculptures' and how many of these are being realised only now, after his death. Lye himself wrote extensively about kinetic art; one chapter focuses on his theories about 'the art of motion', and relates these back to his practice as an artist. Horrocks concludes by discussing how Lye's ideas can be applied to other work and how they are relevant today. Art That Moves includes a DVD containing a short documentary by Shirley and Roger Horrocks, four complete Len Lye films and footage of his sculptures in motion. Len Lye's art moves again - alert and alive - in this well-illustrated book and its accompanying DVD.

Artists Impressions of New Zealand
Artists Impressions of New Zealand
Denis Robinson's latest offering is something of an artist's road trip - a journey from the top to the bottom of New Zealand through the paintings of nearly 60 artists. The tour begins with Northland and runs cross-country to the south of the South Island. Work from more than one artist highlights the nuances of each particular region or city. There are 20 regions covered in the book, with an additional focus on the four main cities, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch - including a commemorative selection of paintings - and Dunedin. The artists have submitted work that expresses their creative or emotional response to places they know well. In the captions they tell the 'story' behind every painting. There is a wide variety of techniques displayed in the work, and often this seems related to place, like central Otago, which attracts more oil painters than Wellington, where watercolourists dominate the painting landscape. All in all, Denis Robinson has once again achieved a portfolio of striking artworks that not only demonstrates the deep well of artistic talent in this country, but also reflects the scenic beauty that surrounds us.

Artwork
Artwork
Peter Campbell was the resident designer and art critic for the London Review of Books. He worked for the magazine from its first appearance in 1979 and wrote more than 300 pieces, mainly about art but also about such things as escalators, weeds, bicycles, bridges and hearts. Each fortnight from 1996 onwards, Peter created a cover illustration for the LRB, coming up with a seemingly infinite array of unpredictable images: a yacht and a starfish, a tram, two knickerbocker glories, a game of dominoes, a man walking past a lighted window at night. The immediate freshness, colour, playfulness and surprise of these covers belied their technical skill, erudition and command of detail and artistic reference. Peter Campbell designed and edited BBC books by Kenneth Clark, Jacob Bronowski and David Attenborough. He worked often with Quentin Blake and wrote the introduction to Blake's The Life of Birds. He worked, too, on several books by his fellow LRB contributor Alan Bennett. He described the LRB job as perfect for him and his 'absurd good fortune'. It allowed his talent and years of expertise to come together. Artwork is a collection of Peter's finest works over the years.
