50 Years of Trophy Hunting
50 Years of Trophy Hunting
If you were to walk into the author's trophy room and silently start counting the mounted hunting trophies you would reach a figure of forty-five animals on display. This book - the author's fourth - is simply the story of the hunt for each trophy now hanging on the walls of his trophy room, each trophy a continuing memory of so many special and sometimes remarkable days of hunting. It was while hunting in Alaska, a way back in 1963, that Gary became a confirmed trophy hunter. In the pocket of his hunting jacket were permits issued by the Alaskan Department of Fish and Game that allowed him one moose, one caribou, one grizzly bear, one black bear, one Dall ram. Before squeezing the trigger on a prospective trophy Gary had to determine that indeed the animal he had in his crosshairs was a fine aged male, for after making a mistake in selection there was no second-chance permit. Long before departing on his once-in-a-lifetime trophy hunt in Alaska Gary read extensively, teaching himself what was internationally considered a trophy of a given species. His "Alaskan Experience" carried over into his hunting for all future hunts, always seeking the outstanding aged male.
And, once a species had been secured the author seldom sought to better a trophy in hand, but instead sought different species in different places, different countries, his trophy hunting being his personal Permit to Travel, often with his wife Sue accompanying him. Gary's dedication to serious trophy hunting carried over into his professional hunting guiding career where daily he sought for his client only the very best to be found. Testimony of this dedication to quality is to be seen in Issue VI Volume 2 of the SCI Record Book of Trophy Animals where nineteen of the Top Twenty-five bull Tahr and sixteen of the Red stag were guided by Gary. Today the author unequivocally supports the formation of the recently established Game Animal Council and fervently hopes that within his lifetime the day will arrive in New Zealand where the average hunter will hunt for trophies not for tally.

Duck Hunting in NZ
Duck Hunting in NZ
The opening of gamebird season - the first weekend of May - has been part of New Zealand's history since the early nineteenth century and still holds an attraction for thousands of enthusiasts - over 30,000 gamebird hunting licences are sold in New Zealand annually. In 2005, non-toxic shot regulations were applied throughout New Zealand (eliminating the impact to the environment by the toxicity of lead) and this signalled the beginning of a new era for duck and wildfowl hunting. Range became even more limited and the challenge correspondingly greater. Author Gary Girvan's passion for the sport expressed in a light, yet authoritative, tone appeals to both enthusiasts and newcomers alike. In Duck Hunting in New Zealand, Girvan shares experiences of hunting in a whole range of situations, gives information about the wide range of equipment available, outlines six steps to successful wildfowling, discusses the use of non-toxic shot and the need to return to the basic skills of wildfowling, and describes how to make a duck plucker.

Hunting Daze
Hunting Daze
Bomb Grant author of Hunting Forever-Forever Hunting and Dances with Boars is back with this new book. What makes a pig hunter? Bomb looks back to his early days at his introduction to the sport of pig hunting, family played a big part for him. The early morning starts, the sound of the dogs on a bail, the excitement and adrenaline are what made him a pig hunter. He then brings the story forward to hunts in more recent times and introduces a collection of other contemporary pig hunters who describe some of their hunts and motivation. This shows the diversity of people hunting and the enjoyment they all get from it. It doesn't matter if you are a cop or a patched gang member, pig hunting has it's own code, unwritten, but broadly understood by all serious participants in the sport. Bomb sets out by example and using the input of other hunters to show how this code is often applied and interpreted in practice. If you enjoy pig hunting this book will keep you entertained as you either agree or disagree with the participants in the yarns. On one level it's a bunch of ripping good stories on another it's an examination of how pig hunting can take over your life.
