100 Australian Poems You Need to Know
100 Australian Poems You Need to Know
If the key to understanding our national character is to be found in our sense of humor, then the key to our sense of humor is located, ultimately, in the best of our poetry. Acclaimed poet Jamie Grant has scoured the bookshelves in search of 100 of the very best, which range from the early nineteenth century of Francis McNamara and Charles Harpur, through the later years of CJ Dennis and Henry Lawson, right up to the present day of Gig Ryan, David Malouf, Stephen McInerney and Kate Jennings. The preoccupations of the different ears are given a full airing - convicts and stockriders, the challenges of drought and war, the rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney, the divide between the city and the bush, and the different approaches of generations S, Y and Z. The 'smaller' issues have their outing too: love, barbecues, giraffes, sky-writing and pumpkins so big they don't seem real.

100 Australian Poems You Need to Know
100 Australian Poems You Need to Know
Poetry? For today's readers? Yes, and not just for those who buy their poetry collections religiously either: this book is for everyone. Frustrated by the perception that Australian poetry is dry, inaccessible and focused only on the country's landscape, acclaimed poet Jamie Grant decided to form his own collection. One that properly encompassed the liveliness of our country's writing and showed that the only thing dry about Australian poetry was the humour within it. The collection ranges from the early nineteenth century of Francis Macnamara and Charles Harpur, through the later years of CJ Dennis and Henry Lawson, right up to the present day of Gig Ryan, David Malouf, Stephen McInerney and Kate Jennings. The preoccupations of the different eras are given a full airing - convicts and stockriders, the challenges of drought and war, the rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney, the divide between the city and the bush, and the different approaches of generations X, Y and Z. The 'smaller' issues have their outing too: love, barbecues, giraffes, sky writing and pumpkins so big they don't seem real.
For anyone curious about what makes Australians who they are, this collection is a must-have. Illustrated throughout with etchings by Bridget Farmer, this book should be in every Australian home.

100 Poems
100 Poems
Seamus Heaney had the idea to form a personal selection from across the entire arc of his poetry, small yet comprehensive enough to serve as an introduction for all comers. He never managed to do this in his lifetime, and no edition exists which has such a broad range, drawing from first collection to last. But now, at last, the project has been returned to, resulting in an intimate gathering of poems chosen and introduced by the Heaney family. Coinciding with the National Library of Ireland launching a major exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Seamus Heaney, 100 Poems is a singular, accessible collection for new and younger readers that has the opportunity to reach far and wide, now and for years to come.

1914 Poetry Remembers
1914 Poetry Remembers
The First World War holds a unique place in the nation's history; the poetry it produced, a unique place in the nation's hearts. To mark the centenary of the First World War in 2014, the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, has engaged the most eminent poets of the present to choose the writing from the Great War that touched them most profoundly: their choices are here in this powerful and moving assembly. But this anthology is more than a record of war writing. Carol Ann Duffy has commissioned these same poets of the present to look back across the past and write a poem of their own in response to the war to end all wars...Whether as a reader your interest is in the Great War or the great war poets, or whether it is in the poetry of today, this anthology will hold a special place in your affections, as it remembers and recalls - and through its commissioned work, renews and honours - the engagement between poetry and this terrible, unworldly of world conflicts.

20th Century in Poetry
20th Century in Poetry
This ground-breaking anthology presents in chronological order over 400 poems written in the twentieth century. The authors, both published poets themselves, give an overview of each period of history, while notes to the poems place each one in its historical context and trace the century's poetic development. Concise biographies for each poet complete the anthology. By organizing the poems in chronological order, readers will see poets in a new light. Here A.E. Houseman, for example, rubs shoulders with T.S. Eliot, showing that traditional forms can hold their own against the modernist orthodoxy. Here are poets rescued from oblivion, such as the suffragette who wrote a compelling poem about her mistreatment in Holloway Prison in 1912 or the medical offer who went into Belsen with the British troops producing an eye-witness poem of lasting power. All the major events of the twentieth century are reflected in the choice of poems within these pages. This richly rewarding collection makes invaluable reading for poetry lovers all over the world.

A Ted Hughes Bestiary Selected Poems
A Ted Hughes Bestiary Selected Poems
Originally the medieval bestiary or book of animals set out to establish safe distinctions - between them and us - but Hughes' poetry works always in a contrary direction: showing what man and beast have in common, the reservoir from which we all draw. Alice Oswald's selection is arranged chronologically, with an eye to different books and styles, but equally to those poems that embody animals, rather than just describe them. Some poems are here because, although not strictly speaking animal, they become so in the process of writing; and in keeping with the bestiary tradition there are plenty of imaginary animals - all concentratedly coming about their business. The resulting selection is subtly responsive to a central aspect of Hughes' achievement, while offering room to some wonderful overlooked poems, and to 'those that have the wildest tunes.'
