Alex Webb La Calle Photographs from Mexico
Alex Webb La Calle Photographs from Mexico
La Calle brings together more than thirty years of photography from the streets of Mexico by Alex Webb, spanning 1975 to 2007. Whether in black and white or color, Webb's richly layered and complex compositions touch on multiple genres. As Geoff Dyer writes, "Wherever he goes, Webb always ends up in a Bermuda-shaped triangle where the distinctions between photojournalism, documentary, and art blur and disappear." Webb's ability to distill gesture, light, and cultural tensions into single, beguiling frames results in evocative images that convey a sense of mystery, irony, and humor. Following an initial trip in the mid-1970s, Webb returned frequently to Mexico, working intensely on the U.S.-Mexico border and into southern Mexico throughout the 1980s and '90s, inspired by what poet Octavio Paz calls "Mexicanism-delight in decorations, carelessness and pomp, negligence, passion, and reserve." La Calle presents a commemoration of the Mexican street as a sociopolitical bellwether-albeit one that has undergone significant transformation since Webb's first trips to the country.
Newly commissioned pieces from noted Mexican and Mexican American authors lend further insight into the roles the streets have played for generations: part arterial network, part historical palimpsest, and part absurdist theater of the everyday.

Dancers After Dark
Dancers After Dark
A celebration of the human body and spirit in more than 100 photographs - all nude, all taken at night. These photographs illustrate the hard work and the dedication it takes to succeed in dancing, acting, photography - or really any creative endeavour that at first may be incredibly frightening or make you feel vulnerable, but once achieved offers an exhilaration previously unimagined. The photos were shot over 200 nights, with 300 different dancers, in more than 400 locations, in all kinds of weather. The photos are grouped by theme - Vulnerability, Ferocity, Stability, Ecstasy - and include shots from sunset to dawn, in spectacular black and white and glorious colour. Many will be accompanied by an inspiring quote. Additional text will include Jordan's introductory essay, describing how he came up with the book idea and how he is inspired by the dancers he photographs, as well as "Behind the Scenes" stories of how the shot was achieved and "In Their Shoes" - words from the dancers on what it was like to be photographed in nude in public.

Double War Shaun Gladwell: Visual Culture and the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
Double War Shaun Gladwell: Visual Culture and the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
This book focuses on art and war and, in particular, the photographs of Shaun Gladwell, an internationally acclaimed young Australian artist who has represented Australia at a Venice Biennale and has also served as an official War Artist in Iraq and Afghanistan. The book is copiously illustrated with images that relate closely to the text, which has been researched and written by Dr Kit Messham-Muir, who conducted numerous interviews with the artist. The main settling point is the proliferation of information about current conflicts and the fear it is instilling throughout the world. Any text or images that can offer insights into this aspect of human behaviour is of considerable interest to a large number of people.

Jump
Jump
Damiani takes great pleasure in re-publishing this classic photo book from 1959 in a beautifully printed facsimile edition. With nearly 200 photographs of Halsman's famous subjects in midair, these uniquely witty and energetic images of airborne movie stars, politicians, royalty, artists, and authors have become an important part of Halsman's photographic legacy. For six years in the mid-1950s, he ended his portrait sessions by asking his sitters to jump. Grace Kelly hikes her skirt with surprising moxie. Marilyn Monroe, Edward Steichen, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Oppenheimer, John Steinbeck, Weegee, Aldous Huxley, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Brigitte Bardot, and Groucho Marx all take the leap of faith - ensuring that we see something about them that we hadn't quite seen before. It is a tribute to Halsman's powers of persuasion that Richard Nixon, the Duke & Duchess of Windsor, Judge Learned Hand (in his mid-80s at the time) and other figures not known for their spontaneity could be talked into rising to the challenge. He called the resulting pictures his hobby.
And in Philippe Halsman's Jump Book, he tells us, with mock-academic wit, that the photos are studies in the new science of Jumpology. The jumps took place wherever the rest of the shoot had been located: in the studio, outside or inside, at the subject's home or workplace. "When you ask a person to jump," Halsman wrote, "his attention is mostly directed toward the act of jumping, and the mask falls, so that the real person appears." As Roberta Smith, chief art critic of the New York Times, wrote in her review of the 2010 Halsman/ Jump exhibit in New York: "There is a sublime silliness to Halsman's images that can make you laugh regardless of how often you see them. They offer incontrovertible proof of Schiller's claim that 'all art is dedicated to joy.' Evidently the simple act of getting off the ground requires giving in to something like joy. You have to let go." It is not coincidental that Halsman devised Jumpology in the era of Action Painting, which sowed the seeds that would soon grow into performance art.
Roberta Smith continues: "Halsman pushed his own form, the studio portrait, to extremes, exaggerating its basic components in ways that make us more aware of them: the trust that must exist between photographer and subject; the split-second 'performance' that any still camera captures; the uncontrollable revelations of character; the way we all try to rise, as it were, to the occasion of a photograph."
