Maori Tales of Long Ago
Maori Tales of Long Ago
Maori Tales of Long Ago is a fresh facsimile edition of a classic collection of sixteen stories adapted from Maori mythology for a young readership. The tales were originally published by A.W. & A.H. Reed during the late 1940s in two hardback volumes, Maori Tales of Long Ago and Wonder Tales of Maoriland. Best-sellers of their time, they gave a generation of New Zealand children a lyrical introduction to the world of Maori mythology. In each story, a myth is narrated and brought to life by genial old Popo, the village storyteller and friend of the chief's son and daughter, Rata and Hine. Now in a new paperback edition, this book faithfully keeps the charming original line drawings by A.S. Paterson, including eight illustrated colour plates. It contains a foreword from David Simmons, a distinguished ethnologist, former assistant director of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, and author of several books on Maoritanga.

Mataatua Wharenui
Mataatua Wharenui
Mataatua wharenui is the most travelled Maori meeting house in the country. Built in 1875, it was taken to Australia, London and Otago before being returned to Whakatane after more than a century away. The story of Mataatua is part of the story of the desecration of Ngati Awa by the Crown and the fight of the people to regain their sovereignty. Following the confiscation of Ngati Awa land in the 1860s and the devastation to the people of Ngati Awa, building a wharenui was proposed as a way to reunite Ngati Awa. The result was Mataatua, a magnificent wharenui, honoring the people, their history and whakapapa, and the skills of the craftspeople, and establishing a living marae. Shortly after it was opened, the government requested that Mataatua be an exhibit at the Sydney International Exhibition, and from here, it travelled across the globe until ending as an exhibit in Otago Museum. By this time, the government had claimed ownership of Mataatua, and it took more than fifty years of perseverance by Ngati Awa to have Mataatua returned to Whakatane to again become a living wharenui in the care of its people.
In words and photographs, the book describes the history and construction of Mataatua, its appropriation, work undertaken by generations to have it returned, and the detail of its rebuild and opening in 2011.

Mauri Ora
Mauri Ora
Pearls of wisdom contained in proverbs - whakatauk I - have been gifted from generation to generation as an intrinsic part of the Maori world. As powerful metaphors, they combine analogy and cultural history in the most economical of words. Short and insightful, they surprise, engendering reflection, learning and personal growth. Mauri Ora links whakatauk I to key personal virtues idealised across cultures and generations. The virtues - wisdom, courage, compassion, integrity, self-mastery and belief - stem from the science of positive psychology; the study of how to live a better life. Illustrated throughout with wonderful photographs from an old world, this book draws on traditional wisdom to provide a recipe for personal effectiveness and leadership, and a rewarding connection of Maori knowledge to contemporary thinking about personal happiness and fulfilment.

This graphic novel set in New Zealand tells the story of Ngarara Huarau, a taniwha or mythical beast, that travels from Hawke's Bay to Wairarapa in search of his sister, Pari-kawhiti. As he journeys, his movement shapes the landscape, and his hunger leads him to eat birds, seals, seafood and people, causing terror as he travels south. Finally, the Wairarapa people of Ngati Tara ask Tupurupuru and his warriors to kill Ngarara Huarau. Tupurupuru constructs a trap and the warriors set upon Ngarara Huarau with weapons, and he sinks into the Uwhiroa swamp. But did he die?
