Home Upgrade New Homes in Remodeled Buildings
Home Upgrade New Homes in Remodeled Buildings
Upgrade 2 is the follow-up to Upgrade, Gestalten's hugely successful title on home extensions, alterations and refurbishments. While the need for housing continues to grow, so does architects' interest in responsible building practices. The renovation of old homes, or repurposing of existing sturctures for housing, occupies the convergence of these two concerns. The results are not only far more eco-conscious, but also thrillingly creative, from pre-fab housing on a budget to lush suburban residences, and even former churches or barns. Presenting both the technical aspects and the particular stories of each case, Upgrade 2 is the reference book for those who want to give the past something more than a fresh coat of paint.

Homes For Our Time
Homes For Our Time
Across small cottages and lavish villas, beach houses and forest refuges, discover the world's finest crop of new homes. This cutting-edge global digest features such talents as Shigeru Ban and Marcio Kogan alongside up-and-coming names like Aires Mateus, Xu Fu-Min, Vo Trong Nghia, Desai Chia, and Shunri Nishizawa. Here, there are homes in Australia and New Zealand, from China and Vietnam, in the United States and Mexico, and on to less expected places like Ecuador and Costa Rica. The result is a sweeping survey of the contemporary house and a revelation that homes across the globe may have more in common than expected.

Among guava trees and abandoned forts in Western India is a sanctuary designed for and by Kamal Malik of Malik Architecture. The House of Three Streams is a sprawling spectacle with high ceilings, verandas, and pavilions, perched atop a ridge overlooking two ravines. A medley of steel, glass, wood, and stone, the house weaves along the contour of the landscape, almost as an extension of the forest. Encina House by Aranguren & Gallegos, an elegant, sloping structure reminiscent of a gazebo, similarly inhabits its surrounding vista. Ensconced in a pine forest north of Madrid, the lower level is embedded in rock and connected to the upper by a natural stone wall. Shinichi Ogawa's Seaside House is an immaculate two-story minimalist marvel in Kanagawa that overlooks the Pacific. Its living area spills onto a cantilevered terrace and infinity pool, almost dissolving into the ocean as one seamless entity. In Vietnam, Shunri Nishizawa's House in Chau Doc exudes tropical sophistication with exposed timber beams, woven bamboo, plants, concrete panels, and inner balconies and terraces. Its corrugated iron panels act as moveable walls and shutters, ushering in views of surrounding rice fields. These homes-along with more than 50 others-are each remarkably distinct in design. They all, however, toe the line between inside and outside, each one symbiotic with its surroundings.

House The dramatic story of the Sydney Opera House and the people who made it
House The dramatic story of the Sydney Opera House and the people who made it
Winner of the 2018 Walkley Book Award

The best-loved building in Australia nearly didn't get off the drawing board. When it did, the lives of everyone involved in its construction were utterly changed: some for the better, many for the worse.

Helen Pitt tells the stories of the people behind the magnificent white sails of the Sydney Opera House. From the famous conductor and state premier who conceived the project; to the two architects whose lives were so tragically intertwined; to the workers and engineers; to the people of Sydney, who were alternately beguiled and horrified as the drama unfolded over two decades.

With access to diaries, letters, and classified records, as well as her own interviews with people involved in the project, Helen Pitt reveals the intimate back story of the building that turned Sydney into an international city. It is a tale worthy of Shakespeare himself.

'A drama-filled page turner' - Ita Buttrose AO OBE

'Helen Pitt tells us so much about the building of the Sydney Opera House we've never heard before' - Bob Carr, former Premier of NSW

'Australia in the seventies: mullets, platform shoes and, miraculously, the Opera House. At least we got one of them right. A great read.' - Amanda Keller, WSFM breakfast presenter

In Memory Of Designing Contemporary Memorials
In Memory Of Designing Contemporary Memorials
Memorials hold a special position in the cultural memory of communities, cultures and nations, and In Memory Of demonstrates this as never before. This extraordinary and moving collection of more than 60 exceptional structures commemorates some of the most destructive events of the 20th and 21st centuries, including war, genocide, massacre, terrorism, famine, and slavery. At the same time, In Memory Of shows that the power to overcome, to survive, even to

forgive, is just as impactful and important.

Thoughtful essays on the subjects of hope, strength, grief, loss, and fear help to contextualize the projects and address the

emotional aspects of memorialization.

Inspiring Tiny Homes
Inspiring Tiny Homes
People have been living in small spaces for centuries, for reasons of practicality, mobility, flexibility or personal choice. More recently, tiny homes have become the answer for many who need somewhere affordable to live and who possess the creativity and energy to make something different. A small home can be relatively cheap to build or convert, and gives its owner choices, reflecting the way they want to live and their concern for the impact they have on the environment. Tiny homes can also be stunningly beautiful and imaginative. They ask their owners to be discerning about what belongings they have - what is necessary and what is beautiful. The choices are individual and can be seen as part of a movement away from money and property-slavery to a more simple and connected way of living. Gill Heriz has brought together a collection of some of the most incredible small homes, from containers in the city to cabins in the countryside. A traditional Mongolian yurt provides off-grid living for its owners, and a portable cabin offers a chic, flexible space. There is a reclusive shack set in woodland, a converted mountainside bothy, and a log cabin pod near the coast. What all the owners have in common is dedication to living well on a smaller footprint.

Interior Landmarks Treasures of New York
Interior Landmarks Treasures of New York
The large format Interior Landmarks was the first book to survey the glories of New York's interior landmarks with carefully researched text and splendid new color photography. This updated affordable edition presents the same content, updated with current information about new ownership and uses for some landmarks. Located throughout the five boroughs of the city, the landmarked interiors include banks, theaters, office building lobbies, restaurants, libraries, civic and educational facilities, and more. Some are widely known and celebrated--Radio City Music Hall, the Great Hall at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Grand Central Station--while others, like Loews Paradise Theater and the City Hall subway station, are virtually unknown.

Forty-six of the 117 landmarked interiors are presented, with a description of the original construction and architectural style and commentary on exceptional design, materials, and architectural details that warrant preservation. Recent restoration efforts and current use of the buildings are also included, making the book a valuable resource and reference work. A catalogue of all 117 interior landmarks, with names of their architects and locations, is also included.

Isay Weinfeld
Isay Weinfeld
Bauhaus minimalism meets tasteful elegance. The Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld designs houses and hotels in style. From one side of the globe to the other, Isay Weinfeld is one of the most sought-after architects. Weinfeld is inimitable in the realm of combining modern elegance with tropical lightness. Under his hand, lushly landscaped courtyards and long corridors open into wide spaces; a view of a pool or a dramatic indoor waterfall. The Brazilian architect's works are characterized by glass and concrete, dark wood shades and soft color accents; all elements of a special brand of distinguished restraint. Isay Weinfeld, a volume dedicated to an architect who rarely discusses his own work, shows the full range of homes and hotels designed for prominent artists, actors, filmmakers, and businessmen. Previously unpublished photographs visually describe his work and discussions of unique projects give insight into Weinfeld's fine set of skills.
